When I first started to work on my project, I expected my paper to be more detailed and very lengthy and my product to be different. I also expected to find a mentor very early on and that mentor to be both knowledgeable and helpful. Unfortunately, some of my experiences did not meet my expectations. Firstly, my research paper was lengthy and detailed, but a little less so than what I had imagined. Secondly, my product was originally supposed to be something added to the teachers’ handbooks along with a live presentation to parents and teachers. Lastly, finding a mentor took forever. This delayed the starting of my project, though my mentor was very knowledgeable and gave me a lot of advice and guidance. While doing the research and writing the paper for this project, my greatest problem was finding resources. I began with a single book as my resource, but I wanted opposing viewpoints as well as other supporting facts. The greatest source that helped me overcome this issue was my mentor. My mentor took the time to help search for resources and showed me tips and tricks on how to find relevant information. The most surprising information that I learned during my research is that girls are more sensitive to sound than boys. Although there are many physiological differences between men and women, I did not expect our ability to hear would be one of them. During this project, I learned that I am not very good at writing research papers and with that knowledge I intend to make myself better at it to help me during college and anytime after that. My project includes two products: a pamphlet and a presentation. After I leave MIA, the presentation will be available online and to the community. It can be presented to teachers every year, along with a distribution of the pamphlets. With these, the MIA staff and community can understand gender differences in education and change their approaches, thus helping students learn better and more comfortably. This project taught me that Islam touches any and every subject we can imagine in one way or another and can be both very specific and very broad so that it encompasses all issues. Now that I have finished, looking back, I wish I had done more research and tried to see if I could find more solutions to the problem I address. My advice for next year’s seniors would be to make sure they start looking for a mentor very early on. Otherwise, they will be delayed with their research paper, which is what happened in my case. For this project, I would give myself a 95 because I believe that I could’ve written my research paper a bit better.
